Monte Sereno

This city has the distinction of being only one of two cities in Santa Clara County to have lost population in the 1990s: down 147 people. There weren't too many to begin with. (See table below.)
One of the first, if not the first, to say no to development, way back in the 1950s.
The housing has many custom-built homes on large lots. Out of 1,259 residences, 1,226 are single-family homes, 25 attached, 7 apartments and 1 mobile home. Wonder how they snuck that one in. Not a lot of homes come on the market in Monte Sereno and when they do, they sell fast. A desirable city with desirable housing.
As Gertrude Stein said of Oakland, "there is no there, there." The residents dine and play in Los Gatos or Saratoga. The Los Gatos Police Department is paid to patrol. Most famous resident was John Steinbeck, who wrote Of Mice and Men while living here.
